The ever popular Hibiscus Festival returns this year with organisers promising a bigger and better event.

The Hibiscus Festival returned last year after a lapse of four years and was a big hit, not only amongst the people of Suva but allover the country.

Some 250,000 people are said to have attended the 9 day festival.

The Hibiscus Committee this year has introduced the categories of Hibiscus Kings, Teen Queens and Lady Hibiscus.

The Hibiscus Festival has a rich history and originated in Fiji in 1956.

It was initiated by members of the Suva Jaycees Inc which was then known as the Suva Junior Chamber of Commerce. Back then Fiji was just a prim and proper British Colony and did not engage in any fun activities.

The credit of this beautiful and colorful festival goes to one of the pioneers of Fijis tourism industry, the Late Harvey Hunt, who proposed the idea of having a relaxation day where the citizens and the tourists could see the Fun side of Fiji.

Today the festival is one of the most anticipated events of the year.

The festival over the years has crowned some of the most exotic Fijian beauties as the Hibiscus Queens.

A Miss Charity crown is also given to the lady who raises the most funds for worthwhile causes.

The 2007 Hibiscus Festival will be held from August 15-25 at Albert Park in Suva.
