Initial period for yacht stay in Fiji extended from 3 to 9 months.

The initial period for yacht stay in Fiji has been extended from three months to nine months.

This is after the Cabinet on March 25th endorsed the Customs Tariff Act (Amendment) Promulgation 2008 to accommodate this extension.

Minister for Finance, National Planning, Sugar Industry and Public Utilities (Water and Energy), Mahendra Chaudhry said that while Government is of the view that the maintenance of Fiji’s borders should remain a priority, it nevertheless recognises the overall benefit and contribution of the yachting industry to the country.

“The yachting industry is one of the growing segments of tourism industry in Fiji and hence support should be given in the promotion and development of this industry.”

He, therefore, said that the current three months period would be increased to nine months and the extension period maintained at three months. Overall, this would mean that the total period allowed for yacht stay would be 12 months.

“In discussions with the stakeholders, this was agreed to be the most suitable time period.”

Chaudhry added that while there has been an extension in the period of yacht stay with a view to assist the industry, the Fiji Islands Revenue and Customs Authority (FIRCA) will continue to strengthen its current processes to ensure compliance by yacht owners to ensure that Fiji’s borders are safe and secure.
