A quieter than usual turnout is driving prices down at the annual Suva on Sale shopping extravaganza

Price reductions are promised at the Suva on Sale shopping extravaganza this week, although the turnout has been described as “poor” and business “slow” by retailers involved.

Fiji Retailers Association president Himmat Lodhia told Fijilive things were “at least better than your average Wednesdays” as shoppers trickle in to hunt for bargains.

“Overall, it has been slow but at least people are buying,” said Lodhia. “I believe things will improve over the next three days because by then, people will be aware and they will come. And because the sale will end on Saturday, I am sure prices are going to go further down.”

At Lodhia’s stall, designer brands of cosmetics, like L’Oreal Lipsticks and Revlon Lipgloss were going for as low as $4 while some pieces of jewellery were selling for as low as $5. Food, clothes and shoes were selling at below $10 and even lower for smart and patient bargain hunters.

The event, which kicked off last Saturday, has drawn shop owners all the way from Nadi and Lautoka.

“My shop is in Namaka in Nadi but I decided this year to come to Suva and try this out. Things are slow but people are buying,” said Kitty Li, who sold inexpensive household goods imported from China.

Li is among the larger number of Chinese retailers evident at this year’s event.

Suva-On-Sale is being held at Cumming Street, Marks Street and Waimanu Rd in the heart of Suva.
