2009 Vodafone Hibiscus Queen Miss FNPF Merewalesi Nailatikau poses for picture after the crowning ceremony at Albert Park in Suva

Merewalesi Nailatikau proved last night that brains and beauty are indeed a winning combination.

Not only did she pass the beauty test and made it to the top five contestants in the 2009 Vodafone Hibiscus pageant, she went on to deliver a well thought out and moving short speech on a random topic she picked from a hat - suicide.

It was an opportune moment which may have bagged the 24-year old Psychology Degree holder the much coveted crown.

Nailatikau, sponsored by the Fiji National Provident Fund, was later named Miss Vodafone Hibiscus 2009, beating 19 other contestants and assuming the role with ease and unmistakable confidence.

This year, a new concept was introduced which saw a group of top five contestants being named and who then each had to be tested on their grasp of topical issues.

Other contestants who made it to the top five were Miss Supreme Fuel/Heart Foundation Sulueti Waqa, Miss Sky Pacific Abigail Young, Miss Suva City Council Sera Fatafehi and Miss Kidney Foundation Nehal Kapadia.

Young was first runner up ahead of SCC's Fatafehi.

Nailatikau will be representing Fiji in the South Pacific beauty pageant in November, to be held in Fiji.
