Cyclists will compete in a three-stage event from Nadi to Suva this weekend.

Top German cyclist Mike Loeser is in Fiji for the countrys first cycling challenge and has dared local cyclists to be in form for the event this weekend.

Im looking forward to racing against the locals, Loeser said.

Here is my message for them, tie your sulus well, otherwise youll be in trouble.

Loeser is part of an 11-member German squad that will feature in the three-stage event which starts from Nadi to Korotogo, Korotogo to Pacific Harbour and Pacific Harbour to Suva.

Organised by the Velocity Cycling Club and Cycling Fiji, the event is part of plans to develop the sport in Fiji.

Cycling Fiji president Dom Sansom expects international teams in greater numbers next year.

We have great hopes of building cycling into a major local sport, able to attract overseas cyclists, Sansom said.

It can play a very positive part in our local sporting scene and create new tourism market.

Loeser has competed in about 35 races on the German circuit, finishing mostly amongst the top 10.

His fastest performance was in the Tangermunde Time Trial when he clocked an average speed of 43.8kph over 28 km to win second place.

Local competitors include Christian Calling, Timothy Fong, Mesake Yalidole, Jope Tikotani, Leena Pratt, businessman Yee Wah Sing, Seini Nau Dakuliga, George Lal, Lionel Evans, Mapa Bolea and Peter Sinclair.
