Fiji's entrant in next month's South Pacific Pageant, Miss Vodafone Hibiscus 2009, Merewalesi Nailatikau.

Besides the excitement of representing Fiji at the 2009 Miss South Pacific Pageant, host country entrant Mere Nailatikau last week launched a nationwide disaster preparedness campaign in a bid to win the prestigious regional title.

Nailatikau who was recently crowned 2009 Vodafone Miss Hibiscus has been working closely with Fiji National Disaster Management Office in keeping the people of Fiji aware of disaster preparedness and recovery.

“The Pacific has been recently affected by natural disasters so this is a very significant topic for everyone living in the Pacific for now and also in the future,” the former journalist said.

“As Miss Fiji, one of my goals is to reach out to various segments of our communities and help spread the important message of always being prepared and knowing what to do when we do get affected by disaster.”

Nailatikau highlighted that young children are influential in homes and she is adamant that by reaching out to them she would be able to mobilise and educate their families and communities.

“We have to be ready for disaster - whether it’s caused by natural phenomena or otherwise.”

As Miss Fiji, Nailatikau was given roughly $13,000 from the Vodafone Hibiscus 2009 charity distribution to prepare for the Pacific Building Solution-sponsored event at Suva’s Albert Park from November 21–28.
