Miss French Polynesia Aruhoia Biret believes Pacific inter-cultural exchanges are important.

Miss French Polynesia Aruhoia Biret is eager to send a strong message to the people of the Pacific during the 2009 Miss South Pacific Pageant at Suva’s Albert Park next week.

Despite the difficulties of having to converse in English, the 20-year-old who arrived in Fiji yesterday highlighted that cultural exchange among countries in the Pacific was very important.

Biret’s mother Anne Maries who is her translator and chaperon said cultural exchanges deepened the understanding of people and also promoted international friendship and goodwill.

“It is important to promote understanding of language, custom and tradition and to strengthen our contact through cultural exchange because at the moment we’re experiencing a hard time trying to understand each others language,” Biret told Fijilive.

“We’ve been preparing for this pageant since last month and one of the biggest challenges we face is the language barrier,” she added.

Still to complete her Bachelors Degree in Economic at Université de la Polynésie Française in Tahiti, Biret who is the third among four siblings said she loved Fiji very much and hoped to return for a holiday sometime soon.

“I love Fiji and I like the people, they’re friendly and the weather is very much like home. I’ve spent the whole day site seeing and too bad I have to return to Tahiti soon after the pageant because I have exams but I hope to return someday for the holiday.”

Biret is a dancer for a Tahiti group Manahau and she also speaks a bit of Spanish and Tahitian.

Biret and Miss Tuvalu Akelita Marisa Pesega are the only two contestants to arrive in Fiji so far.

Meanwhile, Miss Samoa Tusisaleia Hope Pomele will arrive in Fiji at 5.40am tomorrow along with Miss American Samoa Lorisa Matautia while the reigning 2008 Miss South Pacific Vanessa Marsh is expected to touch down at Nausori Airport at 2.15pm.

The rest of the contestants will arrive on Thursday afternoon before the official opening of the weeklong pageant this Saturday.
