19-year-old Millicent Barty will represent Solomon Islands in the South Pacific Pagent in Suva.

19-year-old Millicent Barty is a firm believer in charity.

Representing Solomon Islands to the 2009 Miss South Pacific Pageant (MSPP) in Suva next week, Barty who was born in the Solomon Islands has engaged in charity work while living among the underprivileged in Jakarta and India for the past nine years.

“Charity means to help other through materialistic or financially,” Barty, who is the only girl in the family of five, said.

“I didn’t involve myself with charity work until I started studying in India. My job involved supporting orphanages, organising fundraising for Downs Syndrome patients, confidence boosting programs for the women’s prison and teaching English and helping local streets artist gain recognition for their creativity.”

Barty did not expect to be part of the pageant until she was crowned Miss Solbrew Sports and Culture during the Solomon Islands Sports pageant which raised funds for athletes competing in the 2009 Mini South Pacific Games in Cook Islands.

“I was asked by my sponsors to be part of the pageant and I thought it was an opportunity for me to contribute back to my country after being away since 2000 till 2009. I didn’t expect to win but I was excited when I was told to represent Solomon Islands to the 2009 South Pacific Pageant.”

A resident of Makira Province, Barty has shifted her focus to design technology and arts and will pursue this at the University of Goldsmith in London next year.
