Three local designers scooped their dream prize of an internship with Australian fashion label outlet Kookai for their flashy designs during the Fiji Fashion Week show in Suva at the weekend.
“Second Chance” label designers Joseph Lesbi, Jone Rabune and Patrick Tuivunivasa picked up the special award for their fashion incentive after their design label ranging from pants to shirts was paraded down the catwalk.
The trio will travel to Australia next year to work with prominent Australian designer Rob Cromb, owner of 100 KooKai outlets in Australia and New Zealand.
Besides their internship, the trio who were screen printers at the Fiji Institute of Technology’s School of Graphic and Designs will also attend a weeklong designers’ workshop in Melbourne.
Fiji Fashion Week executive producer Ellen Whippy said the three were seeking to pursue their future in fashion designing and they deserved the prize as they needed exposure.
“Their designs were eye catching and no doubt they were the winners of the special awards because of their uniqueness,” Whippy told Fijilive.
“They are emerging designers and I believe the trip to Australia for the workshop and internship at the fashion label shop will boost their understanding and also give them some exposure. I’m happy that the Fiji Fashion Week has provided an opportunity for local designers to showcase their talents.”
While the Fiji Fashion Week ended on a high note, Whippy said they hoped to come out bigger and better next year.
“We’re extending the fashion show to one week next year and it will be held in September to coincide with the Southern Hemisphere summer. We’re fortunate to have MHCC sponsor our show next year and this is a result of the successful show last weekend. Our next show on the third week of September next year will be held at the Vodafone Arena and I can say that this time around it will be extremely successful.”
The two-day Fiji Fashion Week culminated with the special awards ceremony. Eleni Levin Tevi picked up the Cultural Designer of the Year, while Monique Maginnity won the Emerging Fashion Photographer of the Year. Viliame Sandys was awarded the Best Male Model while Octavia Lal scooped the Best Female Model of the year.
The Fashion Incentive Award was given to the designers of ‘Second Chance’ while Carolynn Ah Koy was awarded the Designer of the Year. Caroleena Bingham picked up the Special Achievement in Design Award while the Fiji Fashion Week FIT Scholarship was given to Gwynnd Fong for being the Emerging Designer of the Year with a unique gothic design inspired collection....
