Tourism Fiji has now thrown is full weight behind a Fiji government scheme to plant one million trees across the destination by 2011.

Building on its Clean Me, Green Me, Fiji Me national low carbon travel and tourism sector initiative, Tourism Fiji has now thrown is full weight behind a Fiji government scheme to plant one million trees across the destination by 2011.

Tourism Fiji CEO Josefa Tuamoto and his team will set an initial example for the destinations tourism industry later this month at the Bula Fiji Tourism Exchange 2010 when they take up shovels to participate in an official tree planting ceremony.

The One Million Trees Our GIFT to the Future Generation campaign was launched in Suva last month by the Ministry of Fisheries and Forestry.

The main thrust of the campaign is designed to ensure future generations continue to enjoy an economically viable and environmentally sound Fiji while addressing a whole host of other issues already having an effect on a national, regional and international basis.

These include climate change, deforestation, soil erosion, carbon emissions, flood mitigation and clean water supply.

Tuamoto said while Fiji was only a small nation, the new tree planting campaign was a further demonstration of how the destination can set the pace when it comes to critical international action in an area already affecting the world on a daily basis.

It has long been a dream of mine to see Fiji, and particularly the countrys tourism industry, become a leader in this area and earn recognition for its efforts on behalf of the entire global village.

I would exhort all my Fijian tourism industry colleagues to get involved with this project and show the rest of the world that Fijians really can set the pace when it comes to environmental issues, Tuamoto saod.

Fiji stole a march on the rest of the world just days before last Decembers UN Climate Change Conference in December when it became the first country to announce a national low carbon travel and tourism sector initiative.

The national tourist office and key players in the destinations tourism, hotel and business sectors have aligned resources with Australian-based clean technology specialist Greenlight Technology Group (GLTG) and the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP) to help advance Fiji as a leading low carbon tourism destination.
