Tourists safe from typhoid outbreak in Fiji's interior.

Tourism Fiji is advising tourists they should not be alarmed by an outbreak of typhoid in five villages in the remote Navosa province on Viti Levu.

Tourism Fiji chief executive officer Josefa Tuamoto said the affected region is located more than 50 kilometers inland from any of the destinations main tourism belts and well off the beaten track.

Tourists visiting Fiji have no cause for alarm as the Fijian government is keeping a very close eye on the situation, he said.

Tuamoto however cautioned those visiting the isolated area to take heed of the local medical authoritys advice and only drink bottled water.

They should also exercise caution when joining kava ceremonies.

The situation is a timely reminder that all international travelers need to ensure all inoculations are up to date before setting off overseas, he stated.

Tumotu made the comments after several foreign media outlets reported tourists were at threat from the outbreak.

Fijis Ministry of Health last week declared a state of public health emergency in Navosa following 28 confirmed cases of typhoid in the area along with two confirmed deaths.

There have been no more fatalities since.
