Pacific Sun will now provide only charte charter service to the Mana and Maloloilai in the Mamanucas due to the route they label as 'loss making'.

Pacific Sun, Fiji’s domestic airline, has announced a change in schedule services to Mana and Maloloilai in the Mamanuca Islands in an effort to what has been labeled as ‘two loss making routes’.

Pacific Sun general manager Jim Samson in a statement said this move will ensure the business is able to continue serving key tourism markets that do not have ferry service.

According to Samson, since its first flight in 2007, Air Pacific has supported a number of routes using its eight-seater islander aircraft but was not successful in covering operating costs.

“As a result, from July 1, Pacific Sun will replace its schedule services to Mana and Maloloilai with charter flights,” he announced.

“As much as we would like to support air travel into the Mamanuca islands, poor economic performance for the last three years has given us no alternative but to cease scheduled services into these resort islands.”

Samson said they have already advised property owners on both the islands in May that they will not be able to support continued service without resort assistance and the owners have requested charter rates.

He said also established the changes in flight will not mean job losses for the employees.

“Pacific Sun employees in the Mamanucas will be re-deployed to the airline’s headquarters at Nadi Airport,” he said.

Samson indicated with the Mamanuca Group serviced through ferry service as well as boat and air charter operations, Pacific Sun will be able to prioritise its flying on other key tourism destinations including, Kadavu, Levuka, Savusavu, Taveuni, Vanuabalavu and Lakeba.

“Visitors to these islands have numerous options for transiting to the Mamanuca’s; thus, Pacific Sun will focus its operations on more distant points that link thousands of international tourists each year.”

Pacific Sun operates a combination of ATR42-500s, De Havilland Twin Otter and Britten Norman Islander aircraft on Fiji domestic routes with the ATR42s’ also serving regional sectors between Suva, Tonga and Funafuti as well as between Nadi and Port Vila.
