“Films must remain a space for cultural expression open to all and must reflect the multiplicity of the identities of peoples and societies forming humankind.”

Those were the words of the French Ambassador, H.E. Mr Gilles Montagnier as he officially opened the 2nd Islands in the World Oceania International Film Festival (IWOIFF) at USP’s Japan ICT Centre in Suva on Friday night.

Supported by the French Embassy, the University of the South Pacific (USP) and Film Fiji, the annual event showcases award-winning and highly-acclaimed independent films from around the world, with a special emphasis on films about Oceania.

The Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Law and Education at USP, Dr Akanisi Kedrayate, praised the festival for providing the public with the alternate opportunity of viewing independent films that are not often screened in mainstream cinemas.

“It is fantastic to see these films, particularly from the region, get the exposure they deserve,” said Dr Kedrayate.

The festival will screen features, documentaries and short films with the public given the opportunity to interact with the filmmakers in Q and A sessions following each screenings.

Filmmakers from France, Britain, Australia, Italy and Argentina are in the capital city for the week-long festival which will end this Thursday April 17.

The public is invited to attend the screenings as well as the panel discussions. Admission is free.
