Legend has it that the gift gift of firewalking was given to the people of Beqa by a Vu (a spirit god) in unusual circumstances.

There are always reports in different parts of the world of strange phenomena but rarely do you get an opportunity to go up-close and scrutinise it as much as you want.

Fijian fire-walking is one such ceremony that is known worldwide and is done quite openly performed by a Fijian tribe from Beqa Island, for all to see.

Of course, the only logical question of how it happens has been raised millions of times and unfortunately for us inquisitive ones, there still has been no scientific explanation to satisfy our curiosity. All investigations into the mystery of the fire-walker`s capabilities have turned up void. No-one has a valid explanation why members of the Beqa Island`s Sawau tribe have the power to walk on white hot stones without injury.

Only an ancient legend may give us an insight. Legend has it that the gift was acquired from a Vu (a spirit god) in unusual circumstances. A famous story-teller named Dredre lived on the island and it was customary to bring gifts in return for his entertainment. On one occasion he asked that each of his audience bring him the next day the first thing found in the day`s hunt. A renowned warrior, Tui na Iviqalita went fishing for eels, but what he though was a good catch was in fact a Spirit God.

Delighted with his good luck Tui na Iviqalita set off to deliver the eel to Dredre. Much to his surprise, the eel revealed itself as a Vu and offered his life in return for a precious gift - the ability to withstand the heat of fire. Tui accepted the offer and a lovo [an oven of stones made hot with a fire of hardwood logs] was prepared. The partially burned pieces were cleared away and the Vu leapt onto the stones inviting Tui to follow. With trepidation and no doubt a suspecting trick, Tui joined the A Fijian tribe on the island of Beqa possess the gift of being able to walk on fire.
