Iguanas are mostly vegetarian but are known to snack on available insects.

Fiji is home to not one but two species of Iguana.
The banded iguana is the smaller of the two species while the more rare of the two, found mostly on drier islands are the larger crested variety.
Their presence on these islands is rather unusual as most iguanas are found in South America, with a few in places like the Galapagos Islands.
One theory suggests that ancestors of these giant lizards shifted to Fiji from South America on a raft of floating vegetation.

The female banded iguana is green while the males exhibit the blue and white banded pattern that earns them their name.

The crested iguana is a majestic creature and grows up to about 80cm. When in conflict, there is a rapid colour change and is more common among males.
Aggressive males turn almost black during these encounters and the prominent banding pattern all but disappears.

Both iguanas are mostly vegetarian but are known to snack on available insects from time to time.

A good place to meet these awesome creatures is the Kula Eco Park in Sigatoka.
A sanctuary has also been created on the island of Yaduataba, allowing one to view the crested iguana camouflaged in its natural environment.
