The basic unisex sulu is wrapped once around the body and secured with a knot.

... home both at the beach and out for the night.

However, this is not the only type of sulu that`s available. There are other modified versions of the common sulu that have become everyday wear for men and women in Fiji.

For women – the sulu is worn in several ways with an added touch – an elastic waistband. Fiji women often wear an outfit called a chamba which is made up of a top and a sulu. This is the common attire of most female resort and hotel workers in Fiji.

Women attending Sunday church services or traditional Fijian functions will often wear a sulu (called a sulu-i-ra) underneath their dresses.

The sulu also doubles as part of a dancer`s costume during the performance of a traditional Fijian meke (dance).

Men often wear a more formal version of the sulu almost everywhere – to work and to formal occasions like church services and gatherings. The sulu is called a sulu va taga - literally meaning a sulu with pockets.

These versions have all evolved from the humble sulu – making it a versatile piece of clothing indeed.
