Hindus in Fiji mark the birth of Lord Krishna today.

Hindus in Fiji mark the birth of Lord Krishna today in a celebration known as Krishna Janmashtami.

The celebrations started eight days ago and come to an end with the recital of prayers at around midnight tonight.

Devotees pray and fast on this day to celebrate Krishna’s birth.

A local priest, Uma Chand of Nav Durga Shakti Mata mandir (temple) at Valelevu in Nasinu told Fijilive that it is believed that Lord Krishna was born during midnight amidst heavy rains around 5000 years ago in an era known to Hindus as Dwapur Yug.

The Bhagawad Gita contains Krishna’s universal message of human perfection and excellence in one's duties and responsibilities, the priest said.

During these eight days Hindus around the world listen to recitals from the Bhagawad Gita.

Hindus across the country do their bit by flocking to temples, holding fasts and reciting hymns and prayers.

Chand added that the birthday of Lord Krishna was an occasion to display universal love, selfless service and spiritual bliss.
