Happy couples have come from as far as England, the United States of America, Canada, Japan, Switzerland, Germany, Finland, Australia and New Zealand to do something very special but in a different way – tie the knot in magical Fiji.
Getting married in Fiji has become quite a trend in this century. In fact, many of the large resorts and hotels on the islands now offer wedding and honeymoon packages.
Imagine a breathtaking garden of tropical fauna, a warm breeze gently rustles the leaves on the trees, and just as the sun begins its descent below the horizon, a Fijian choir breaks into song.
In the background, the beating of the lali (Fijian drum) heralds the arrival of the bride with her warrior escort to stand beside the groom ready to be joined in holy matrimony before the minister.
The surrounding palms nod in gentle acknowledgement of the reverence of the moments as the wedding ceremony commences which takes about half an hour.
With the soaring popularity of Fiji as a wedding and honeymoon destination, many of the hotels and resorts offer fully arranged ‘hassle free’ weddings complete with a ceremony, reception and the perfect spot to spend a honeymoon.
All you need is a birth certificate; if the bride or groom is under 21, a written consent from parents or a guardian is required; or if you’re divorced relevant papers must be submitted before a special license is issued. A marriage license can be obtained within one working day from the Registry of Marriage located in Suva, Lautoka or Labasa.
Pre-arranged weddings, including the minister, flowers, wedding cake, traditional Fijian costume (this is optional), marriage license, reception and all the other island trimmings, start at about $900 per couple.
If you’re miles away from family and friends, your extended Fiji family will make the event a memorable day you’re not likely to forget.
You literally have nothing to worry about. All you need to do is get a special license from the Registry Office which is all organised for you anyway.
The hotel or resort staff go out of their way to make the day special and everyone gets a buzz out of a Fiji wedding. There is so much fun and joy going on with the preparations that you won’t have time to feel nervous!
Some hotels and resorts that do arrange weddings are The Warwick Fiji, The Naviti, The Outrigger Reef Resort, Hideaway, Shangri-La’s The Fijian, Sheraton Fiji, Sheraton Royal, Beachcomber Island Resort, Mana Island Resort, Tokoriki Island Resort, Treasure Island Resort and Nukubati Island to name a few.
