Young and upcoming swimmers who left for Darwin to represent the Tritons Swimming Club at the Arafura Games

Fiji Swims is organising an ocean swimming extravaganza that is expected to promote Fiji globally.

The annual meet at the Mamanuca waters in the South West part of the Fiji group is expected to attract some of the best ocean swimmers in the world.

Race Director David Handley says the event will promote and help tourism in the country.
“Fiji has always been a place I love so it’s a dream come true to bring international swimmers here to enjoy the stunning tropical waters and Fiji sun,” he said.

“Swimmers come from all over the world to enjoy Fiji’s natural beauty and friendly hospitality as well as the social aspect of the swims. Last year there were entrants from Australia, Fiji, Hong Kong, the USA and New Zealand.”

“Swimmers should come and take part in the most beautiful swims in the world,” he added.
The tournament would be from Thursday July 24 to 26 at the Mamanuca Islands.

Organisers are inviting local swimmers in the meet to compete in the fifth annual event.

Designed for all swimmers the race would include an 18 kilometre ocean swim on July 24 from the Sofitel Fiji Resort at Denarau in Nadi to Beachcomber Island.

The race is open to teams of up to five people.

The 2.7km Beachcomber swim on July 26 is for solo swimmers who can join up to 160 others taking part.

Former Olympians who have swum the 2.7km course in the past include Shane Gould, John Konrads and New Zealand’s Danyon Loader.

There will also be a 1km swim on July 26.

“The swims are open to all ages and last year we had local participants as young as seven-years-old doing the 1km swim. The Fiji Swims donates $5 from every swimmer’s registration fee to the Amateur Swimming Association of Fiji.

Details for the 2008 Fiji Swims:
Thursday July 24: 18km Fiji Swim: Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa to Beachcomber Island Relay;
Saturday July 26: 2.7km Fiji Swim: Beachcomber Island; 1km, Fiji Swim: Treasure Island to Beachcomber Island.
