Fiji FACT fans cheer for their teams at the stadium during the 2009 Vodafone Fiji Fact in Suva.

Football fever grips Fijis capital Suva this long-weekend as it hosts the 2009 Vodafone Fiji FACT tournament at the countrys largest sporting facility, the TFL National Stadium.

The first major tournament on the Fiji Football Association calendar provides soccer patrons with five days of fun-filled action and entertainment both on and off the field.

Ten super premier districts are battling for top honours, with Navua all out to defend its title which it won in Nadi last season.

Fans from all across the globe are part of the action and drama as they join the carnival atmosphere to celebrate a feast of football.

Local tournaments like the FACT brings back home former citizens now in Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Canada.

Its not just fans who travel from abroad to be part of the tournament but players as well. This seasons edition of the tournament has a total of 15 international players taking the field.

Solomon Islanders and Ni Vanuatu players top the list of imports while a French player and a Serbian-born Australian will also be in action.

Tournament sponsors Vodafone have added more color to this years tournament with the inclusion of some fantastic competitions for spectators, one of which has a prize of $100 for shooting into an empty goal mouth from a range. That competition is quickly gathering huge interest.

Stalls selling district team jerseys and flags and food stalls selling Indian delicacies like palau, kebabs and curries alongside barbecues and snacks give the tournament a carnival-like atmosphere.

As with such tournaments, the kava stalls and beer parlours are the popular spots, ready to quench the thirst of soccer enthusiasts chanting slogans such as Ba to Ba hai, Sak nai Pai, Kaun Roki, White Fire, Go Blues, Be the Reds and the list goes on.

Apart from giving thousands of football fans the opportunity to enjoy themselves, tournaments such as the FACT are another way of bringing the countrys different communities together in a carnival atmosphere and help inject joy and a spirit of togetherness into the national lifeblood.

The Fiji FACT ends on Monday with the final scheduled for 3pm.
