Jail term for Nadi robbery suspects

Two Nadi men have been jailed by the High Court in Lautoka after they broke into a shop and stole items worth $18027.

The men who took an early guilty plea broke into Ken’s Shop Mart which was closed due to the floods and stole items which included assorted liquor worth of $4,157, cigarette worth of $6,348, recharge cards worth of $5462, groceries worth of $260 and cash $1,800 were included.

The court heard that after police investigations Solomoni Roqara and Alivereti Driu were lavishly drinking and spending money on their own while only $42.10 worth of items were recovered.

In sentencing the men Justice Sitambarampillai Thurairaja said they committed the offence at the time of national disaster but he will consider their early plea, age and all other circumstances.

Roqara is sentenced to 18 months but will only serve 9 month imprisonment and the balance of 9 months is suspended for a period of 2 years while Driu gets 12 months imprisonment, will serve 6months and the balance of 6 months is suspended for a period of 2 years.
 
They have 30 days to appeal.
