Junior Japan ended its campaign in the 2017 World Rugby Pacific Challenge in second place after beating Tonga A 42-33 in their last match at the ANZ Stadium in Suva today.
The young Japanese brigade registered two wins and a loss in the four nations’ tournament.
Tonga A scored two quick tries through Paki Afu to lead 12-0 in the first ten minutes of the match.
Japan A hit back with two tries through Fuala Makisi and Kosuke Horikoshi to take a narrow 14-12 lead.
Makisi dived in for his second try of the match in the 29th minute to put the Japanese up by 21-12 but a try by Fredrick Kei narrowed the points to 21-19.
A try by Shogo Nakano just before the break gave Junior Japan a 28-19 halftime lead.
Nakano scored Japan’s fifth and his second try of the day midway in the second half to extend their lead by 35-19 before Topui Sekona touched down for Tonga to keep them in the game.
Captain Sione Lolohea got the Tongans within close range again after diving in the corner but a late try by Makisi sealed the important win for Japan.
