At least 400 people from each MSG country could be allowed to work in other MSG countries if a labour mobility scheme is approved at this month's MSG summit.

The Melanesian Spearhead Group Skills Movement Scheme will be discussed by the senior officials and foreign ministers meeting later this month.

Fiji Ministry of Industry and Trade Permanent Secretary Shaheen Ali told a press conference today contractual agreements are made to cater for the unemployment rate in Melanesian countries.

Ali said Fiji has a surplus in pre-school, primary and secondary teachers while there is a shortage in other MSG countries.

“In order to address unemployment in Fiji and at the same time address skills shortages in other MSG countries, you can allow temporary movement of qualified people to further lack skilled sectors in the region,” he said.

Also, he said the Papua New Guinea mining sector demands skilled and qualified workers in various areas.

He said Fiji and other Melanesian countries will be able to use resources in the region rather than outsource it from outside the Pacific.

He said the MSG countries had a lot of skilled and professional people compared to other Pacific islands.

He said the new scheme will become a model for temporary movement of people in the Melanesian region and then extended to the Pacific.”
