Minimum wage review expected by June

Fiji's wages councils are expected to put forward changes in the minimum wages for consideration by June.

In a statement, Labour Permanent Secretary Taito Waqa said the minimum wage and sectoral wages need to reflect productivity.

Waqa said there are 10 wages councils looking at wage determinations, but the chairman has asked for more time so all councils can complete their proposals.

He said they have used the International Labour Organisation’s criteria in the determination of sectoral minimum wages and there are six sets of criteria.

Waqa said one of the important criteria apart from Consumer Price Index is the labour productivity growth rate as they need to go towards productivity based wage rates.

Last year, the government announced a 10 per cent increase for nine industrial sectors, including the hotel and catering, garment, saw milling and logging industries along with the mining, printing, wholesale and retail and the security services sectors.
