Certain school items will be exempt from tax until late February said Fiji’s Prime Minister, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama during his official New Years address yesterday.

Although tax increased to 15 per cent as of January 1st, these items which include exercise books, text books and stationary will be zero rated.

Commodore Bainimarama said these items will be zero rated from the 4th of January to the 28th of February and he urged parents to take advantage of the tax exemption.

In his address, Bainimarama highlighted the importance of education for the development of the country saying that “education is empowerment.”

He reiterated that transparency was important to move the nation forward and would be beneficial for all.
