Fiji’s Minister for Education Dr Mahendra Reddy has suspended for an indefinite time a teacher at the centre of the death of a Jasper Williams High School student last week as he sounds a warning to teachers to change their approach to students or face the axe.
The National Youth Party (NYP)is calling for the establishment of a new ministry to look after religious affairs in the country.
NYP leader Korovou Nayagodamu said since there are a lot of different churches and religions, there is a need for a ministry to unite them together under one umbrella.
“It is also proposed that all religion ministers be registered like teachers and the minister be given power to terminate.”
In the party’s proposal to the formulation of the new constitution, Nayagodamu also proposed that religion study be made compulsory in all schools.
“For all government schools all these three religions’ will be taught, Hinduism, Muslim and Christianity. In other schools, let the religion of those that run the school be compulsory in those schools. For an example in all Muslim schools Muslim studies will be compulsory.”
He said we can integrate this to the value education and remove the sex education from the MOE curriculum.
“Students also need to be taught from an early age that having sex before marriage is not allowed.”
For the contribution to a religious organisation, NYP also proposed that contributions to church organisations be receipted so members can claim 100 percent of these contributions in their tax return.
Nayagodamu said this will help members fund their churches.
