Fijian athlete shot dead in US Fijian athlete Roy Ravana Junior was this morning shot dead by unknown assailants in the United States.

The former Marist Brothers High School 400m and 4x 400m champion athlete who also won a bronze medal at the 2011 Pacific Games was a student at the IOWA Community College.

It is believed he was trying to save a friend when he got shot. His friend has been hospitalised with injuries as Sacramento Police have taken a man in custody and are conducting their investigations.

According to Police, the shooting happened in the area of 48th Street and Roosevelt Avenue around 12:48pm.

Former Athletics Fiji official and family friend Seini Ratu said the whole athletics fraternity is in mourning and the family is trying to come to terms with the news of their loss.

She said Ravana Junior had a bright future ahead of him and was one of Fiji's medal prospect.

Ravana was in Fiji's squad for the Commonwealth Games, Oceania Games and next year's Pacific Games in PNG.
