Petition for GCC reinstatement defeated Fiji’s Parliament today defeated a petiiton tabled by the Opposition for the reinstatement of the Great Council of Chiefs.

The petiition was tabled by Opposition MP Viliame Gavoka who stated that SODELPA party supported wanted the GCC to return.

Opposition Leader, Ro Teimumu Kepa in her support for the motion said the GCC needs to come back as it is the only institution that can help in the relocation of Fijian villages and areas affected by climate change.

MPs Prem Singh, Aseri Radrodro and Jiosefa Dulakivereta also spoke in support of the motion.

29 MPs voted against the petition, 16 voted in favour while 5 opted not to vote.

As Speaker Dr Jiko Luveni announced the results, MP Gavoka intervened and said that for a motion to be passed on to the standing committee; a 40% vote is required and he believed this was achieved with 16 votes in favour.

The Speaker ruled that a calculation of 40% was done and the motion required 20 votes to progress to the standing committee.
