Jun 03, 2016 12:27:56 PM

Committee recommends suspension for Draunidalo The Privileges Committee tabled its report to Parliament this morning on the matter of privilege against Opposition MP Tupou Draunidalo, recommending that she be suspended for the remainder of the term of Parliament, with immediate effect.

The committee has recommended that Draunidalo formally apologise to Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts Dr Mahendra Reddy and the people of Fiji in Parliament  and the the apology must reflect the severity of the breach and the fact that it has had far-reaching effects and gone viral on social media here and abroad.

The recommendation stated that the apology format should also recognise that the Honourable Minister did not in fact utter the words “dumb natives”; and Hon. Draunidalo be suspended for the remainder of the term of Parliament, with immediate effect from 03 June 2016 upon tendering of the apology and censure by Parliament.

The Committee also recommended that during the period of suspension, Hon. Draunidalo will not allowed to enter the parliamentary precincts including the Opposition Office and immediately upon her suspension, she must be ordered to leave the precincts of Parliament and to remain outside of Parliament precincts; and if Hon. Draunidalo fails to comply with any of the above, that necessary enforcement measures must be imposed to ensure compliance.

The members of the Privileges Committee who sat to determine these recommendations are Deputy Speaker Ruveni Nadalo (Chairman), Inia Seruiratu, Leader of the Government in Parliament and Minister for Agriculture, Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management, Faiyaz Koya, Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism and Rosy Akbar, Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation.

The Committee was tasked by Speaker Dr Jiko Luveni yesterday to look into a matter regarding the use of offensive words by MP  Draunidalo in Parliament while Education Minister Dr Mahendra Reddy was making a comment on the National Toppers Program on Wednesday.

Debate on the committee’s recommendation is currently underway.
