Increased allowances for MPs, Speaker The Fijian Parliament today passed the emoluments motion, which will see an increase in allowances for all Members of Parliament, Ministers, the Speaker and the Leader of Opposition.

The recommendation for an increase came from the Parliamentary Emoluments Committee earlier in the week and the motion was passed after some intense debate.

39 members voted in support of the motion, 2 voted against it while 9 chose not to vote.

While tabling the report, Chairman of the Parliamentary Emoluments Committee, Brij Lal said that the committee did not recommend any salary rise for parliamentarians as Fiji was still recovering from Tropical Cyclone Winston.

The committee which also comprised of Minister Jone Usamate, Government MP Alvick Maharaj and Opposition MP Mikaele Leawere however recommended an increase in allowances.

MP Lal said after getting submissions from FijiFirst, SODELPA and NFP, the committee recommended that the Prime Minister’s overseas travel allowance be set at UNDP subsistence allowance plus 250% plus $600 per day.

The overseas travel allowance for the Prime Minister is currently set at UNDP subsistence allowance plus 50% plus $300 per day.

The overseas travel allowance for cabinet ministers will now be set at UNDP subsistence allowance plus 200% plus $500 per day.

The current allowance stands at UNDP subsistence allowance plus 50% plus $250 per day.

Overseas travel allowances for Speaker Dr Jiko Luveni and Leader of the Opposition Ro Teimumu Kepa has been set at UNDP subsistence allowance plus 100% plus $300 per day.

The current allowance for the two position holders in Parliament is currently set at UNDP subsistence allowance plus 50% plus $150 per day.

Committee sitting allowances for Members of Parliament including Assistant Ministers have also increased from $80 per day to $200 per day.

The new allowances will be in place until December 2018.
