Security, Police Acts up for review The Ministry of Defence and National Security has an eventful year ahead as the Security and the Police Acts will be reviewed, says Minister Ratu Inoke Kubuabola.

Speaking in Parliament this week, Ratu Inoke said the review of these Acts comes from his pledge made to ensure women and children are able to live with dignity, without fear, gender based violence and child abuse around this time last year.

Minister Kubuabola said there were numerous consultations carried out to improve the governing of the Security industry.

“The review of the Security Industry Act 2010 is underway and the ministry has done numerous consultations with the legislative house, the ministry through the act intends to work closely with the stakeholders to improve on the processes and regularize the governance of the industry properly.”

“The review of the Fiji Police Act is progressing through continued consultations with relevant stakeholders and we will present a final draft to the officer of the Solicitor General by the end of this year.”

“In line with the Fiji Police Force’s modernization project it has embarked on institutional restructure that will strengthen its capability to curb multi-faceted crimes and border crimes by  making the force more capable of meeting 21st century challenges.”

The Ministry is also working with the Fiji Police in building mechanisms to deal with substance abuse.

Other initiatives undertaken to build capacity include international engagements to step up the campaign against transnational crimes such as narcotics, while locally reviewing the initiatives to fight illicit drugs.

“To build the capacities, our authorities need appropriate training and requisition of proper and up-to-date equipment,” Minister Kubuabola added.
