Accident witness denies stealing claims A witness at the carnage in Nabou, Sigatoka which claimed seven lives last Saturday has denied allegations of stealing and says he was there to help the victims.

Veresia Sokosoko’s photos went viral on social media as he was pictured standing next to one of the victims, trying to grab him by his pants.

Posts on social media claimed that he allegedly stole the personal belongings of the victims.

Sokosoko has denied all allegations and relayed his side of the story to the Police Media Team.

"When we arrived at the scene, some were busy taking photos of the victims while a few others including one European lady was assisting the victims, so we tried to help in whatever way possible".

"My family has been attacked and people look at me differently all because of some lies on social media,” he said.

Sokosoko said he collected a number of items from the scene and handed it over to a police officer, who he could only describe as wearing a uniform with 3 stripes.

He said he was taught by his parents to help and not steal and is urging those who may have taken items to do the right thing and return it to police.

"Please stop making up stories or assumptions about something you don't know because families end up being hurt and I am being labeled a criminal when all I tried to do was help".

The Fiji Police Force has confirmed the officer to be from the Traffic Department at Nadi Police Station and the officer has confirmed receiving the items from Sokosoko.

The items have since been claimed by the families of the victims expect for two bags which are yet to be claimed.

Meanwhile Commissioner of Police Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho has acknowledged those who genuinely assisted the victims following the horrific accident in Nabou last weekend.
