Bainimarama honors fallen soldiers Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama honored fallen Fijian peacekeepers yesterday by laying at wreath in their memory at the North Lawn Memorial at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

During the solemn ceremony of remembrance, PM Bainimarama offered his gratitude for the courage and sacrifice of Fijians serving in peacekeeping operations over the past 40 years.

A minute of silence was observed during the ceremony to pay tribute to those Fijian peacekeepers who laid down their lives in the line of duty.

"It is an honour, and a humbling moment, for me to take part in this solemn ceremony of remembrance. As Fiji commemorates its 40th year of participation in United Nations Peacekeeping this year, I carry with me today four decades of great hope, and great sacrifice, of the Fijian people," he said.

"Over these past 40 years, Fijian Peacekeepers have defended the weak, protected the vulnerable, and restored hope to those unfortunate, in dangerous and conflict torn areas around the world.”

“The legacy of Fijian peacekeepers continues to this day through the nearly 900 men and women currently serving as United Nations Peacekeepers around the world. All are worthy successors to that 40-year legacy of sacrifice, of perseverance and of commitment, which we honour today".

The ceremony was attended by the Fijian delegation at the United Nations General Assembly, staff from Fiji's Mission in New York and senior military officials from Australia, New Zealand and Ireland.
