Public advised to exercise caution

Oct 03, 2018 03:20:19 PM

Public advised to exercise caution The National Disaster Management Office is advising the general public to exercise caution as a heavy rain warning remains in force for parts of the country.

Pedestrians and motorists are advised to refrain from walking or driving through floodwaters.

Though shallow and still in appearance, floodwaters may be deeper and faster flowing and may contain dangerous debris. Flooding can also erode or wash away road surfaces creating potholes or uneven surfaces which may not be visible.

Parents and teachers are advised to monitor the whereabouts of children at all times and to keep them away from flooded drains or waterways.

Families are advised to keep emergency kits at all times that include clean drinking water and canned/dried food, a battery powered radio, a torch with spare batteries, medicine, essential documents, clothes, and other essentials.

Members of the public can contact the Fiji Roads Authority by phone on 5720 to enquire about affected roads and crossings.

A Heavy Rain Alert is in force for the interior and eastern parts of Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, northern Yasawa and northern Lau Group.

Strong winds also continue to affect parts of Fiji land areas and all Fiji Waters. This is dueto a high pressure system to the far southeast of Fiji that continues to direct fresh to strong easterly wind flow over the Group.
