Radrodro sworn in for the second time as the Minister for Education

Social Democratic Liberal Party Leader Aseri Radrodro has been sworn in for the second time as the Minister for Education, by His Excellency, President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere at the State House.

Radrodro, whom the Prime Minister dismissed for insubordination in January 2024, took the oath of allegiance and oath of due of execution of office, pledging his commitment as a Minister.

His wife, Sainiana Radrodro, and close family members were present and attended the swearing-in ceremony.

Background

In January, the Prime Minister in a national address said that his dismissal as the Minister had to do with the termination of the appointment of the Chairperson and three members of the Fiji National University Council in May 2023.

Rabuka said the Solicitor-General’s Office advised Radrodro that the decision was unlawful and must be withdrawn.”

Rabuka said the members of the FNU Council can only be terminated in limited circumstances and with a two-thirds majority of the Council during their meeting and only after the members have been provided an opportunity to be heard.

He said the Solicitor-General also met with Radrodro to urge him to comply with the legal advice given – However, despite the Prime Minister’s written directive and discussions with Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica, Radrodro failed to comply with the directive.

“On Friday 19 January 2024, I decided to dismiss Radrodro from Cabinet for insubordination and disobedience to my directive.”

The Prime Minister said this decision was not made lightly and was taken only after due process had been followed.
