Districts call for P/R Series scrapping

By Sunil Sharma

Districts want the promotion relegation series scrapped beginning 2014.

Fiji Football league board secretary Jainendra Sukhu told FijiLive this was recommended and supported by district representatives who attended a meeting in Ba today.

The meeting was to discuss tentative NFL fixtures for the new season and discuss ways to boost the competition and crowd support as per a request from the sponsors.

“Districts have shown their support for an 8-team format. This motion will be forwarded to the ordinary congress for approval,” Sukhu said.

Sukhu says the 8-team format will see direct demotion of two teams from the top flight while the two teams from the premier division will be promoted to the Super Premier.

“It will be direct demotion and promotion so that means there won’t be any promotion relegation series,” Sukhu said while discussing specifics of the motion.

“The districts have also agreed for a double header from next season which will also pave the way for poor districts to get equal and better share from the gate takings,” Sukhu said.

“We will soon be allocating venues where double headers will be played for the 2013 season. Majority of the districts have agreed on this revised sharing arrangement.”
