Fiji ends campaign with heavy loss

The Fiji football team ended its Olympic Games campaign with a 10-0 loss against Germany today at the Estadio Mineirao Stadium in Belo Horizonte.

The Frank Farina coached side after displaying some good football against Mexico earlier in the week was a no match for the Germans and made so many defensive blunders.

Serge Gnabry opened Germany’s account in the 6th minute of play and the goals came pouring after this with Nils Peterson (3), Maximilian Meyer and Gnabry getting on the score-sheet as Germany led 6-0 at halftime.

Meyer netted two more goals in the second half but failed to get his third as Fijian goalkeeper Simione Tamanisau saved his penalty brilliantly while Peterson scored his fourth of the day with a penalty and later followed with his fifth in the 70th minute to become one of the tournament’s leading goal-scorers.

The win sees Germany progress to the quarterfinals with South Korea.

South Korea defeated champions Mexico 1-0.

Fiji lost its opening match to South Korea 8-0 and went down fighting 5-1 to Mexico.

The team is expected to return home in the weekend.
