Champs Ba escape with 1-1 draw

Reigning champion Ba registered a 1-1 draw against Rewa in its opening match of the 2016 Courts Inter District Championship (IDC) at the ANZ Stadium in Suva today.

The Men In Black fielded a new-look lineup and left out key players like Alvin Singh and Osea Vakatalesau from the match day squad while Rewa also made last minute changes to their lineup after dropping three key players from their squad this morning.

The first half failed to produce any goals although both teams tried their best to find the back of the net.

Rewa went up in the 66th minute through striker Epeli Saukuru after connecting well with a Joseph Mishra through pass and tapping the ball past two sliding Ba defenders and goalkeeper Josaia Ratu.

The Delta Tigers were reduced to 10 players a couple of minutes later after defender Mitieli Namuka was sent off following his second booking of the encounter.

Referee Rakesh Chandra awarded Ba a penalty in the 79th minute after one of the Rewa defenders was found guilty of handling the ball.

Antonio Tuivuna converted the penalty and leveled scores to make the last 10 minutes interesting and exciting.

Iosefo Verevou managed to walk past the defence in the 87th minute but failed to execute his final attempt into a goal and shot wide while Saula Waqa also missed a sitter for Ba towards the end of the match.

Ba will face Dreketi in its next match at 1pm tomorrow while Rewa will come up against Nadi at 5pm.
