Labasa reps dominate national squad

Seven members of Labasa’s Inter District Championship (IDC) winning squad have been included in the 35-member national squad for next year’s FIFA World Cup Stage Three Qualifiers.

Seasoned defender Taniela Waqa, Captain Akuila Mateisuva, defenders Praneel Naidu, Remueru Tekiate, midfielders Edwin Sahayam and Akeimi Ralulu together with in-form marksman Ratu Apenisa Anare have all made the cut after their outstanding performances.

Captain Roy Krishna and Australia based Fiji U20 marksman Leeroy Jennings are only overseas based players in the squad while Suva’s Madhawan Goundar and Ravinesh Karan Singh get their first call-up in the senior team.

Defender Alvin Singh who is taking a short break from football has not been included.

The squad moves into camp at the Fiji FA Academy in Ba on October 23.

Fiji plays New Zealand in its first match in March and prior to that the team is expected to play a few friendly international matches as part of its buildup.

Fiji squad: Simione Tamanisau, Benaminio Mateinaqara, Akuila Mateisuva, Shaneel Naidu, Vereti Dickson, Ilaitia Tuilau, Iliesa Lino, Matiasi Toma, Taniela Waqa, Remueru Tekiate, Praneel Naidu, Jale Dreloa, Ilimitama Jese, Dave Radrigai, Filipe Baravilala, Zibraaz Sahib, Laisenia Raura, Madhwan Gounder, Akeimi Ralulu, Edwin Sahayam, Tevita Waranivalu, Shameel Rao, Nickel Chand, Malakai Tiwa, William Valentine, Savenaca Nakalevu, Antonio Tuivuna, Iosefo Verevou, Setareki Hughes, Saula Waqa, Ratu Apenisa Anare, Rusiate Matarerega, Leeroy Jennings, Roy Krishna and Ravinesh Karan Singh.
