Nasinu wins Senior Division final

Nasinu lifted the 2016 Courts Inter District Championship (IDC) Senior Division title beating defending champion Navua 2-1 in extra time.

The all southern clash had a lot of fireworks as both teams gave their best despite the wet and slippery overcast conditions at the ANZ Stadium.

The first half failed to produce any goals but Nasinu skipper Anish Kumar managed to find the back of the net with a pile driver.

Navua levelled scores just before fulltime through Netani Doli to take the match into extra time.

Striker Jone Naraba sealed the win for Nasinu in the second spell of the extra time after a missed clearance by the Navua defence gifted him the opportunity just infront of the goalmouth.

Nasinu Coach Richard Lal said his players worked hard during the tournament and deserved the victory as they had been consistent and play some good football.

“We missed out on the Southern League and we were serious about winning the IDC. The conditions were tough but I told my boys to throw everything in the final and play for district pride and all the people of Nasinu. I am proud of their achievement and this win is for all Nasinu people here and around the globe.”

Navua Coach Nazir Hussein said they played well but could not capitalise on their chances and were punished for a defensive mistake.

“As defending champion, there was pressure on us from the first day but we took one game at a time and managed to reach the final. It was a good final and both teams had equal chances. Nasinu was lucky to score from our mistake while we failed to utilise our chances,” he said.

Earlier in the semifinals, Nasinu defeated Rakiraki 2-0 while Navua registered a similar score-line against Taveuni.

Nasinu returned home $7000 richer while Navua received $2000.
