10-man Blues overcome Suva

Lautoka overcame a tough Suva challenge to register a 1-0 victory in its third match of the 2016 Pacific Cup at Prince Charles Park in Nadi today.

The Blues after going down 2-0 to Auckland All Stars yesterday entered with a couple of changes to their starting line-up.

Samuela Drudru, Dave Radrigai and Valerio Nawatu started ahead of Mohammed Shazeel Ali, Ratu Josefata Ducagi and Shameel Rao while Suva welcomed Madhavan Goundar in its starting team after he missed the first due to work commitments.

Veteran Peni Finau netted the only goal of the match in the 24th minute after Suva’s right back failed to clear the ball on time.

The afternoon however was not too sweet for Finau as he was sent off midway in the second half for elbowing an opponent.

With a player short on the field, Lautoka Coach Kamal Swamy made three tactical changes and sent in Jone Vesikula, Mohammed Shazil and Leisari Qalica to tighten up play in midfield and defence.

Suva’s Setareki Hughes and veteran Pita Rabo had two late chances but the pair was denied on both occasions by goalkeeper Benaminio Mateinaqara.

Lautoka now has six points from three matches and faces the USA All Stars at 2.30pm in its last game tomorrow while Suva has three points and will need positive results in its remaining matches against Rewa and the Auckland All Stars tomorrow.
