Injured Tiwa out as Simi leads Fiji

By Sunil Sharma

A knee injury has forced Ba midfielder Malakai Tiwa out of the Fiji soccer squad preparing for the OFC Nations Cup to start this Saturday at Lawson Tama Stadium in Honiara.

National team director Tarunesh Reddy said this is a blow to the side’s campaign.

“Tiwa has a lot of experience and he has the talent, the vision and the skills which would be an asset to the side,” Reddy said.

The Ba marksman was injured during their Vodafone Fiji FACT semi-final match against Lautoka.

“Till yesterday he was under the watch of our team physio and doctor. We are left with no choice as the physio has indicated that Tiwa will need a good break from football to fully recover.

“The team physio has informed us that he will not be fit by next week.”

Tiwa has been replaced by Rewa’s Ilisoni Logaivou whilst Ba’s Laisenia Raura, Labasa’s Akuila Mateisuva and Rewa’s Epeli Saukuru stand in as non-travelling reserves.

As expected, Simi Tamanisau will lead the side as captain and his Lautoka mate, Peni Finau named as his assistant.
