Dere warns against complacency

Digicel Fiji 7s coach Alifereti Dere admits they cannot afford to be complacent heading into the Dubai and South Africa 7s tournaments.

Speaking to FijiLive, he reiterated gone are days where one can differentiate between teams saying that the abbreviated code is now a global game and that all teams are equally capable.

“You cannot underestimate any team. We may have won in the Gold Coast but that does not mean we will have it easy the second time or any other time after that,” Dere said.

“Kenya went up to the Cup quarterfinal in Gold Coast, we met Spain in England and they came close to beating us and then there is Scotland we were grouped together in Gold Coast and they were not an easy side.

“So, for us it’s important not to get ahead of ourselves and focus on playing the game we can play and better.”

The team will take on an Army team based side in Nadi in a scrimmaging session in their last hit-out before they depart for Dubai tomorrow morning.

Dere said the session at 4pm today is aimed to put into practice game plans they have set out for the Dubai 7s tournament.

“It is also to gauge the improvements we have made and areas we can still work on to ensure we are playing our best in Dubai and at the South Africa 7s the week after,” Dere said.

The team is injury-free and no changes have been made to the side since the team announcement last Friday.
