Almandin wins 2016 Melbourne Cup

German-based horse Almandin won the 2016 Melbourne Cup in Flemington today after edging Heartbreak City by a nose to hand owner Lloyd Williams his fifth title.

The win makes Williams the most successful owner of Melbourne Cup winners.

Williams has now figured in the ownership of five Melbourne Cup winners while jockey Kerrin McEvoy has ridden his second winner of the race, his first, with Brew in 2000.

Almandin overcame a potent international challenge to beat the Irish stayer Heartbreak City with Hartnell taking the third place.

Jockey McEvoy timed his race to perfection, as they turned for the final straight the seven year gelding broke clear alongside Heartbreak City, hitting the lead with just metres to run.
