The Fiji Airways Men’s 7s side overcame South Africa 21-17 in a thrilling London 7s final this morning.
Fiji was reduced to six players just after the kick-off as Sevuloni Mocenacagi was sin-binned for taking an opponent out in the air.
South Africans took advantage of an extra player on the field and scored the opening try of the match through Stedman Gans to lead 7-0.
Josua Tuisova broke a few tackles and raced all the way to the try-line to tie up the match 7-7 at halftime.
Paula Dranisinukula scored Fiji’s second try straight after the break and a successful conversion from Amenoni Nasilasila gave the Fijians a 14-7 lead.
Ruhan Nel kept the Africans in the contest with a try in the corner which reduced the scores to 14-12 but a brilliant effort from a retake by Jasa Veremalua saw him race away from a few defenders, unleash a pass to Josua Vakurunabili and getting the ball back to touch down for Fiji’s third try which was successfully converted by Nasilasila.
South Africa scored one more try through Zain Davids but it was not enough to beat the more determined and focused Fijians who stuck their heads together until the final whistle to win their fifth gold medal of the HSBC World Sevens Series.
Hard-hitting forward Semi Radradra was named the Player of the Final.
Earlier in the semifinal, Fiji defeated Ireland 38-12 while South Africa defeated host England 29-19.
