Suva thumps Labasa, faces Blues in final

Host Suva thumped Labasa 4-0 in the first semifinal of the 2018 Courts Inter District Championship (IDC) at the ANZ Stadium tonight to book a date in the grand final tomorrow against defending champion Lautoka.

The Gurjit Singh coached Whites were a class of their own and completely dominated the semifinal clash as Labasa struggled to keep up with the pace of the match and made so many mistakes both in defence and attack.

Bruce Hughes found the back of the net in the 15th minute after Napolioni Qasevakatini's stunning free-kick screamed off the cross-bar and bounced down, falling in his path.

Qasevakatini doubled Suva's advantage a miinute late with a stunning strike. His first attempt was tapped by the keeper but the second shot was rocketed into goal.

Suva led 2-0 at the break and continued its dominance in the second with Qasevakatini again setting up Hughes for the third goal in the 51st minute.

Captain Filipe Baravilala also registered his name on the score-sheet in the 80th minute with a beautiful strike from the edge of the box which caught the goalkeeper off-guard and landed into the right hand corner.

Coach Gurjit Singh said his players gave their all and played constructive football throughout the encounter.

"It was one of our best performances in this tournament and we scored very good goals. We expected Labasa to come out strongly but had a game plan to counter them and I thank my players for sticking to our tactics and doing a great job today."

"We are happy to progress to the final and after a good rest tonight and recovery, we will map out our game plan for the final against Lautoka tomorrow which will be a tough one for sure but we will prepare accordingly," said Singh.

The grand final between Lautoka and Suva kicks off at 3pm tomorrow.
