U23s dominate Fiji team vs Play Fair Brazil

In line with their long term plan, Fiji coach Carlos Buzzetti and his team will focus on youths when they name their 25-member squad to prepare for the Play Fair Brazil outfit who will be touring the country for two matches next month.

National team director Tarunesh Reddy told FijiLive that the core of the squad that will be announced at the half-time break of the Inkk Mobile Battle of Giants tournament final will consist mostly of players from the Fiji U23s outfit that played in the Olympic qualifiers in New Zealand in March.

“The idea is to build up a youth team that will be ready for selection in future tournaments and we are looking at the 2015 Pacific Games and the 2016 OFC Nations Cup,” Reddy said.

“This is part of our long term plan, we want to start earmarking these players for future Fiji teams and the only way to do this is to start early.

“We are looking at the U23s to develop them over the long term. The squad will also consist of some senior players. But, the names won’t be announced until the final day of the BOG.”

He said the coaches were happy with the performances of the players in the first round of the BOG at Labasa’s Subrail Park, but feel that they still need more time to assess each player.

“And they believe that they will have a better picture in Lautoka when the teams will be playing 90-minute football on a daily basis for four consecutive days.

“It will be testing time for players. They will feel the pinch and it will be a good basis for the coaches to discern which players are best to be selected into the squad.”

The BOG resumes this Thursday at Lautoka’s Churchill Park which Fiji FA chief executive Bob Kumar says is ready and in tip top shape for the tournament.
