Hat-trick of titles for Daveta Rugby

Daveta Rugby collected their first ever Cobra Rugby 10s title to complete a clean sweep on their Asian Tour having come off two earlier successfull title defence in Sanadakan and Singapore.

The Nadroga-based club defeated hosts Combined Old Boys Rugby Association (Cobra) 38-5.

This was to be third title on tour having won their first at Borneo International Club Sevens in Sandakan and the second at the Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) Sevens in Singapore.

The Fijians’ defence were not troubled as Cobra only managed one try against Daveta’s five.

Team manager Paula Biu credited team work, discipline and commitment in the win.

“Our team goal and mission was to win the three tournaments and for our young players to gain international experience and exposure.”

The team returns to Fiji this week in time for the week’s 3-day Coral Coast 7s, and regarded highly heading into the tournament.

However, a modest Biu says they will take it a game at a time, setting their goals and working towards it.

Daveta’s first try came from Ratunaisa Vatuinaruku putting Daveta up on the scoreboard.

Another try two minutes later made it 14-0 before Craig Clare reduced the deficit to 14-7.

But the joy was short-lived as Daveta responded with an additional three tries to walk away with the Cup and FJ$35650.60 prize purse.

Leading up to the Cup final, Daveta came through day two undefeated in their pool games to defeat New Zealand’s Ponsonby in the quarterfinal and UK’s Penguins in the semi final.

Davetalevu was grouped in Pool C with French Froggies (France), NS Wanderers and NNK Northlink (South Africa).
