Fijiana qualifies for World Cup

The Telecom Fijiana side has qualified for next year’s Women’s 7s World Cup in San Francisco after finishing the 2016/17 World Sevens Series in fourth place.

The top four placed nations in the Series- New Zealand, Australia, Canada and Fiji together with host nation, the United States of America automatically qualify for the World Cup.

Fijiana was placed fifth ahead of the Clermont 7s in France in the weekend but a fifth place finish in the tournament saw the Iliesa Tanivula coached side end the season with 66 points.

They were level with Russia on points but prevailed on a tie-breaker to earn their first ever top four finish in the Series.

Fijiana lost its opening pool matches 31-14 to host France and 35-5 to Australia but managed to thump Spain 45-7 to book their spot in the gold medal quarterfinals where they lost to series winners New Zealand 31-7.

In the fifth place semifinal, they defeated Russia 24-7 and overcame the USA 24-19 in the final.

New Zealand won the Series with 116 points while last season’s winners Australia finished second with 100 points and Canada finished third with 98 points.
