Naicker replaces injured Hughes

Nadi utility Andrew Naicker has replaced injured striker Setareki Hughes for Fiji’s World Cup Qualifier away match against New Caledonia on Sunday.

The Vodafone national team left our shores today with an injury-stricken side.

Midfielder Christopher Wasasala is also set to miss the match after picking up a toe injury against the New Caledonians on Wednesday while Iosefo Verevou who twisted an ankle during training yesterday remains under a cloud of uncertainty.

Coach Christophe Gamel said he is not so confident after losing two key players and they will face a lot of problems in New Caledonia.

“We had very less time for training, I tried to fix some problems but we will face a lot of problems there in New Caledonia,” he said.

“There are injuries in the team as well and I did not call anyone new but have 22 players in the team for this kind of things.”

He said Naicker is the most suitable replacement for Hughes as he has been working hard with the squad for the past two weeks and it is important to give him trust and game time.

Gamel is also anticipating New Caledonia to be very powerful at home.

“It will be tough playing on their home ground and this game will determine how we react in front of a big crowd as we know that New Caledonia will be very strong and powerful.”

The teams played to a 2-2 draw in their last outing in Lautoka with Fiji coming from behind to force the stalemate.
